McGee Gets First Win of 2007 Under His Belt

(Galesburg, Illinois - MAY 16th, 2007) -- The Miller Lite IMCA Modifieds followed the hobby stocks onto to the 3/8 Mile track with 23 cars taking the green flag. Kevin Goben and Scott Boles would start the 20-lap event putting on a fierce battle early on for the top spot, with Goben slipping out front leading the first three laps. The first caution flag flew on the fourth lap and Dean McGee had already worked his way into the top four after a 10th place start. At this point Goben, Boles, Mike Weikert, McGee and Rich Smith rounded out the top five. After the restart, Boles would then dive low and take the point away and now work hard to hold off Goben for the top spot. A few laps later, McGee passed Weikert for third and pulled Darin Thye along with him to do battle for the top four spots.

By lap 10, the top four were running closely together, two by two, with Goben and Boles side by side and McGee and Thye side by side. Boles and Goben were both trying to edge out front from one another on the bottom half of the track, while McGee and Thye were each trying to find the right hole to get through and take the top spot. By this point Rich Smith had jumped into the top five and Bill Roberts Jr. was making his way back to the front after an early race flat. On lap 14 of the 20-lap race, Thye would find an opening, while McGee, Smith and Goben all get bottled up on the bottom.

Thye and Boles would then battle while extending their lead from the rest of the pack. Thye's bid for the win would be cut a few laps short though. As he was coming by the flag-stand on lap 15, his car began to smoke badly and he would start to coast into turns one and two and down the backstretch. As Thye was trying to get to the infield, Boles was charging to his back bumper and had to get on the brakes to avoid hitting him. This would allow McGee to pull up to Boles, and then the race was on for the last 4 laps. Boles would hold the lead on laps sixteen and seventeen, but it wasn't his night. McGee, moving up from his fifth row start, moved up a line from the bottom and passed Boles coming out of turn four with two laps to go. McGee went on for the win and held off Boles to get his first win of the 2007 season. Boles would finished second followed by Bill Roberts in third, after making his way back to the front after an early flat tire, and Goben and Smith rounding out the top 5.
